DevOps Training Is Broken: Teaching Judgment, Not Just Commands
We train DevOps engineers the way we'd train for a trivia night: memorize the flags, recall the command, pass the cert. Then we drop them into on-call and expect judgment — the ability to reason about an unfamiliar system under pressure, with incomplete information, when the runbook doesn't quite match reality. The gap between what we teach and what we expect is the actual problem.
This talk makes the case that operational reasoning is a trainable skill we mostly leave to chance, and that the gap gets worse, not better, in an AI-assisted world. When the machine can recall every command instantly, command recall stops being the differentiator. What's left is the part training ignores: framing the problem, spotting the missing context, and knowing when the confident answer is wrong.
